Our humble Ona-sadya. This is the first course (lentils); second course is sambar; third course is payasam (vermicelli). The pappadam disappointed a little by not rising. But the rest of it (almost entirely home-made) was yummy. Clockwise: pappadam, lime pickle, pachadi, inchi-puli (ginger and tamarind), sarkara puratti (think banana chunks with jaggery), upperi (banana chips), cabbage thoran, avial, koottu kari, salt, ghee, green lentils (mung dal).
dear vsm, as you said, basic home-made stuff. but still, ate more than I should have, and had a nice nap. in restaurants you might get a lot more side-dishes, but those are just frills. onam is really about renewing family ties and friendships and wishing your loved ones a wonderful year ahead.

Rajeev , It's not all that simple . It's a typical Ona Sadhya which your people had prepared.
Most of us had similar components on our Elas on the Thiruvonam day. All the best VSM
